Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) Hair Transplant
Smart Graft Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) Hair Transplantation:
FUE is the ultimate treatment for hair restoration. This procedure uses individual follicles from the hair at the back of your scalp and transplants them to the frontal areas. The hair follicles at the back of the scalp are resistant to the DHT molecule and therefore do not die in the same way the follicles at the front and top of the scalp do.
This procedure is done under local freezing only. It takes 5-8 hours to complete depending on the number of follicles that are being transplanted. Because individual follicles are removed, there is no linear scarring at the donor site, and it avoids the old style of “plugs” that left an unnatural appearance. We often pair this procedure with PRP at the time of transplant and recommend LLLT in the healing phase to ensure the hair follicles survive (think about this as planting a garden of seedlings and needing to tend to the garden to ensure the plant survive and grow)
How does the procedure work?
1. Hair in the area where follicles will be removed as well as around the transplant area will be trimmed/shaved.
2. Local freezing will be injected into the donor site area
3. Using a micro-punch tool individual follicles will removed from your scalp
4. Individual follicles will be prepared for transplant
5. Bandage will be applied to the donor site and you will have to opportunity to take a break for a snack/drink/washroom break
6. Local freezing will then be injected into your recipient site
7. Tiny needle pokes will then be made where the extracted follicles will be inserted.
8. Individual follicles will be carefully inserted into the small needle sites
9. Your scalp will be cleaned and bandaged for recovery.
What to expect after your procedure?
● Don’t wash your hair or shower for at least 3 days.
● Use gentle, unscented shampoos for a few weeks once you start washing your hair.
● Take a couple of days off work to help speed up healing.
● Don’t comb or brush your new hair for at least 3 weeks.
● Don’t wear hats, beanies, or other clothing that goes over your head until your doctor says it’s OK. ● Don’t do any strenuous physical activity for at least a week.
● Some hairs may fall out during the healing process. This is normal. You’ll probably start to notice a difference after 3 to 4 months and full results will be expected at around 1year
*Depending on the health of your transplanted hair, your hair may not grow back as thick as expected.
